Jupiter Mining Company The US Fan Club
The American Red Dwarf Fan Club began in 1991 in conjunction with the Official Red Dwarf Club
in England (under Nic). Here in the States and Canada, we distribute "Better Than Life" The
Official Red Dwarf Newsletter to over 600 club members. We also encourage fans to get together
locally (Washington, California...) to smeg out. Groups get together to discus fandom, watch
videos and help answer phones at public television stations.
Speaking of public television stations, in America we have commercial television stations that air
television commercials around programming. We also have public television stations that don't air
commercials, but rather rely on viewers to donate money (pledging) to support their favorite shows
like Red Dwarf. Red Dwarf fans help local public television stations by pledging money and
answering phones during pledge nights.
Public television stations air only in local markets (Boston, San Francisco, Seattle...) and not all
public television stations air Red Dwarf. Currently, Red Dwarf airs in about 15 local markets
(cities) in America and Canada. The videos for all six seasons and the Smeg Ups video are
available throughout the country.
The U.S. club is represented at most American Science Fiction Conventions that feature one of the
Red Dwarf cast members. In 1995, Danny John-Jules was in Denver for Brittacon. Also in 1995,
Hattie Hayridge and Norman Lovett were both in Chicago for Visions 95. After Visions, Hattie
made a guest appearance at the local public television station (KTEH Channel 54) in San Jose,
California to support the Red Dwarf pledge night. Just reciently, Robert and Craig also make guest appearences on KTEH in San Jose and KCTS in Seattle.
In a nutshell, Red Dwarf airs infrequently in over 15 cities here in America. Over 600 Official Red
Dwarf Fan Club members enjoy the newsletter "Better Than Life" and anything to do with Red
Dwarf (books, videos...). Fans here in America enjoy watching Red Dwarf on public television and
enjoy supporting their local public television stations that air Red Dwarf.
